- Finely made rattlesnake effigy
pipe. Believed to be pre-Columbian, dating to the Mississippian
period (AD 800-1600). Probably made from steatite.
Note the diamond pattern incised along the stem and the rattles
surrounding the tip, leaving no doubt regarding the identity
of the subject. More delicate in form than most effigy
pipes of the period. The exact origin is undetermined,
but it likely came from the general area of North America between
the southern shores of the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico.
8 ½" overall length. Bowl is apprx. 1 ½"
