Odd Fellows axe from King
Solomon Lodge No. 62 I.S.H., in Versailles, Kentucky, emblazoned
with a large gold heart on either side. 48" L. x 15 ¼"
W at axe head. Unfortunately, this piece had multiple splashes
of bright blue paint on it when we acquired it. We carefully
scraped them off, touched up all of the scrape marks, then applied
a coat of clear lacquer. Some very minor traces remain and are
noticeable on close inspection. The letters I.H.S. probably represent
a so-called "Christogram" referring to Jesus, based
upon an amalgam of Greek and Latin initials that commonly appeared
on various documents and burial monuments as far back as the
3rd century. Circa late 19th Century. The axe displays beautifully,
as shown. (CP-22)
