- Great small pine country
Hepplewhite apothecary chest with splayed front feet found in
Ohio. 18"H x 19 ¾"W x 9 ¼"D. Maker
unknown, although the upper right drawer bears the penciled inscription:
"Wm. C. Tobey", followed by the name "Morris".
This is a conundrum because William C. Morris was a furniture
designer in the mid to late 19th century who designed some pieces
for the Tobey Manufacturing Company of Chicago. This suggests
that the inscription represented some musings by a former owner
about the origin of the chest rather than a signature. Drawers
have hand cut dovetails and there are original hand-cut nails,
along with a few later wire nail replacements. Some expected
minor age splits and losses. Minor reinforcements to the
feet. Probably dates to the mid-19th century but could
be earlier. (CH-1)
