- Rare brass skirt lifter,
used to lift a ladys long dress while dancing, playing
games or just to avoid wet, muddy conditions. These would be
attached by a ribbon or chain running from the ring to loops
in the ladys dress, or to a sash around her waist. The
weight of the device would then hold the pads at the bottom closed
on the fabric of the dress.this one has a decorative shield featuring
a bust of a Roman soldier. Circa 1880's. Probably English, although
some were made in other European countries and also in America.
