- Early carved fish on a wooden
plaque. This item is very reminiscent of Oscar Peterson carvings,
but we cannot make that attribution. It would appear to be of
a rainbow or brook trout and is approximately 19" long.
The plaque is 26" long by 8" wide. The piece is rather
heavy. It is impossible for us to say whether the fish is carved
in relief or has been attached to the plaque with some cementitious
substance, without performing some potentially destructive tests.
The plaque itself is cut from some hardwood, possibly walnut
or hickory. There are original holes for hanging and a prior
owner attached a wire hanger. Paint on the fish appears original,
save for a tiny spot on the upper back which had worn off and
we touched up. Large glass eye is original. We think the carving
may well pre-date much of Peterson's known work, reportedly done
by him in the first half of the 20th century, beginning in 1905,
but it is impossible to say for sure. It could possibly be an
earlier effort by him before he refined his style. Multiple additional
photos are available upon request. (CQ-17)
